Pope Francis has died on Easter Monday aged 88

Pope Francis passed away on Easter Monday, April 21, 2025, at the age of 88, at his residence in the Vatican's Casa Santa Marta.  The Vatican confirmed that he died at 7:35 AM local time from a stroke, followed by irreversible heart failure.

Born Jorge Mario Bergoglio in Buenos Aires, Argentina, Pope Francis made history as the first Jesuit, the first Latin American, and the first non-European pope in over 1,200 years. Elected in 2013 following the resignation of Pope Benedict XVI, his papacy was marked by efforts to modernize the Catholic Church, including advocating for the marginalized, addressing climate change, and supporting civil unions for same-sex couples.

Despite health challenges, including a recent hospitalization for double pneumonia, he continued his duties, delivering his final Easter blessing from a wheelchair.

In accordance with his wishes, Pope Francis will be buried in the Basilica of St. Mary Major in Rome, making him the first pope to be interred outside the Vatican since Pope Leo XIII in 1903. The funeral is expected to take place within the next few days, with dignitaries from around the world anticipated to attend.
