Tim Walz Candidate for Vice President of the United States
The pick of Minnesota Governor Tim Walz as Kamala Harris's running mate reportedly sparked worries from a Department of Homeland Security (DHS) staffer that it would "feed into" China's influence attempts in Washington, D.C. A whistleblower raised these concerns in an internal DHS group chat, pointing to Walz's long relationship with China, which includes more than 30 visits and ties to Chinese educational institutes. In order to evaluate any possible national security threats associated with Walz's previous activities in China, the House Oversight Committee has opened an investigation and is requesting DHS information.
According to recent media reports, while teaching in China in the late 1980s, Minnesota Governor Tim Walz allegedly flirted with Jenna Wang, the daughter of a senior Chinese Communist Party official. Recent statements from Wang indicate that she felt emotionally invested in the relationship and hoped for a future together, even though Walz never committed to her. Wang said that after the separation, she felt hurt and underappreciated. A larger Republican-led probe of Walz's connections to China, including criticism of his frequent visits and involvement in cultural exchange programs while he was a teacher, has given rise to this first-hand narrative. Republicans argue that if Walz replaces Kamala as vice president, his connections could pose security risks.
