Caroline Ellison is a former CEO of Alameda Research, the crypto trading firm founded by Sam Bankman-Fried (SBF), who was also the founder of FTX, a major cryptocurrency exchange. Ellison became widely known due to her involvement in the collapse of FTX in November 2022. The bankruptcy of FTX exposed major financial mismanagement and allegations of fraud, leading to significant legal repercussions.


As part of the fallout, Ellison, along with others from the FTX inner circle, faced legal scrutiny. In late 2022, Ellison pled guilty to multiple charges, including fraud, and cooperated with authorities as a key witness against Bankman-Fried, who faced more severe accusations related to defrauding FTX customers and misappropriating funds between Alameda Research and FTX.




Ellison's involvement in the scandal shocked many due to her significant role in the financial management of Alameda. Before the collapse, she had been a somewhat enigmatic figure in the crypto world, maintaining a low profile despite her influential position. However, the downfall of FTX brought her actions and role into the public eye, highlighting the risky practices and lack of oversight at both FTX and Alameda Research.


Her cooperation with prosecutors has made her a central figure in the ongoing legal proceedings against Bankman-Fried, which are expected to shape the future of cryptocurrency regulation and governance.

Caroline Ellison, the former CEO of Alameda Research and a key figure in the FTX scandal, was sentenced to two years in prison on September 24, 2024, and ordered to forfeit $11 billion. Her sentencing follows her involvement in one of the largest financial frauds, connected to the collapse of FTX, a cryptocurrency exchange once valued at $32 billion. Although Ellison cooperated extensively with prosecutors, which helped secure the conviction of FTX founder Sam Bankman-Fried, U.S. District Judge Lewis Kaplan determined that her role in the scheme warranted prison time to deter future white-collar crimes. Ellison’s cooperation and remorse were acknowledged, but the judge declined to grant her a completely lenient sentence, noting that she had to face the consequences of her actions.
