Emiliano Martínez

Emiliano Martínez, commonly known as "Dibu" Martínez, is an Argentine professional footballer who plays as a goalkeeper for Aston Villa in the English Premier League and the Argentina national team.

Born on September 2, 1992, in Mar del Plata, Argentina, Martínez has gained significant recognition in recent years for his impressive performances both at the club and international levels.

Martínez's career took off after a long spell at Arsenal, where he was often loaned out to various clubs.

However, it was his breakthrough performance during the 2019-2020 season at Arsenal, especially helping the team win the FA Cup, that earned him a move to Aston Villa in 2020. At Villa, he quickly established himself as one of the top goalkeepers in the Premier League.

Internationally, Martínez became a hero for Argentina during the 2021 Copa América, where his crucial saves, especially in the penalty shootouts, helped Argentina win their first major international title in 28 years.

His commanding presence in goal, coupled with his ability to remain calm under pressure, also played a pivotal role in Argentina's victory at the 2022 FIFA World Cup.

His penalty saves in the final against France, particularly in the shootout, solidified his status as one of the world's best goalkeepers.

He also won the Golden Glove award for the best goalkeeper of the tournament.

Known for his passionate and sometimes fiery personality, Martínez is celebrated for his shot-stopping abilities, leadership, and clutch performances in high-pressure situations.

Lionel Scaloni has confirmed that Emiliano "Dibu" Martínez will miss Argentina's upcoming two World Cup qualifying matches against Venezuela and Bolivia.

This comes after Martínez was suspended by FIFA due to disciplinary issues, including a post-match incident where he struck a camera after Argentina's loss to Colombia.

He also faces a fine of around $18,000.

In his absence, the likely candidates for goalkeeper are Gerónimo Rulli, who has shown strong form for Olympique de Marseille, Walter Benítez, the consistent starter at PSV Eindhoven, and Juan Musso, currently a backup for Atlético Madrid.

Scaloni will make a final decision before the match, but Rulli appears to be the frontrunner based on recent form and experience.
