wisconsin flags half staff

In Wisconsin, flags are flying at half-staff on September 27, 2024, to honor U.S. Army Air Force Staff Sgt.

Ralph H. Bode. Bode, who was from Racine, lost his life during World War II, and his remains have recently been identified and returned for burial.

Governor Tony Evers issued an executive order for this tribute, reflecting the state's respect for those who have served and sacrificed🥺😏😌.

Staff Sgt. Ralph H. Bode, a World War II hero from Racine, Wisconsin, was finally laid to rest on September 27, 2024, exactly 80 years after his plane was shot down over Germany.

Bode, who served as a tail gunner on a B - 24 H Liberator, was declared missing in action when his aircraft was downed during a bombing mission near Kassel on that date in 1944.

His remains were recently identified through anthropological analysis and mitochondrial DNA, after being recovered from a crash site near Richelsdorf, Germany.

The identification process involved exhuming remains from various cemeteries, which ultimately led to confirming that one set belonged to Bode in late 2023.

His burial in Racine provided closure for his family and was marked by a significant ceremony.
